An excess is not a footnote. It is an amount you may need to find at claim time, so it deserves the same attention as the premium.
Can more than one excess apply?
Ask whether the basic excess can be combined with another amount for a young or newly licensed driver, theft, an unlisted driver or a particular type of incident. Request an example using your circumstances. A rand figure is more useful than a vague assurance.
What changes if I choose a voluntary excess?
Some products let you accept a higher excess in return for a lower premium. Work out whether you could pay that amount tomorrow without borrowing. Saving a little each month is poor comfort if the claim becomes unaffordable.
When do I pay it?
The timing can affect your cash flow. Ask whether the excess goes to the insurer or repairer, whether it is deducted from a settlement, and what happens if another driver was responsible. Do not assume recovery from the other party will be quick or certain.
What if the damage is minor?
If repairs cost only a little more than the excess, claiming may not make sense. Ask how a claim could affect your record or future premium, then get a repair estimate before deciding. Report the incident when the policy requires it, even if you are still weighing up the claim.
Insurance products and circumstances differ. Check current policy wording and get appropriately authorised help when you need a recommendation for your situation.
